The Serve – Back Scratching Position

The so-called “back scratching” position on the serve is probably one of the most over emphasized cliches I see taught in the game of tennis.

In fact, it can get to a point where players are so focused on achieving that position that their serve ends up as a weak push at best.

It it true that we need to be able to drop the racket head down below our head during our service motion to generate decent racket speed, BUT, the racket should never actually stop there.

Come on, think about it.  When you visualize someone scratching their back with their racket, at least for me, I get a vision of someone pointing their racket down their back and literally working their racket up and down on some little imaginary itch.

That is absolutely the wrong picture you want to have in your head when you think about your serve’s mechanics.
