Tennis 2nd Serve Spin – Your Head Alignment

One of the big challenges in producing a true topspin 2nd serve is making sure that your spacing (that’s right, spacing is crucial with your serve mechanics) is precise when you make contact.

The tempo (the deliberate speed) of your tossing motion is absolutely crucial to helping you get into an ideal set up position to then start your swing.

Does a fast tossing motion help you produce a better 2nd serve spin?

NO…

I want to get you over to a really great video that Jim McLennan has just published on that specific topic.

But first, I’ve got a quick tip for you on your 2nd serve, specifically where your head should be aligned at contact.

If you look forward too early, true topspin towrads the service box won’t be happening.

Tennis 2nd Serve Confidence

Here’s how you can start every point with confidence when you have to play a 2nd serve.

One of the things that my good buddy and fellow teaching pro Jim McLennan continues to hammer home is that you’re only as good as your 2nd serve.

Right, that’s probably one of the most used cliches in tennis teaching, but it’s so obvious that a lot of players easily look right past it.

If you miss your 1st serve, would you say you get a positive or slightly negative emotional response?

Most players don’t miss their 1st serve and then start jumping up and down for joy.

If you’re not 100% confient that you can then spin in a 2nd serve that doesn’t give your opponent an advantage, then guess what, you start the point off from a place of low to no confidence.

Here’s what I mean…

Tennis 2nd Serve – Does Yours Just Sit There?

Jim McLennan and I are old friends from way back in the Pleistocene age.

Jim and I both worked on our tennis games extensively with the legendary Tom Stow.

I was late getting to Tom, not until my early 30s, while Jim had the benefits of working with Tom at a younger age.

I continue to learn from Jim about what Tom was saying.

I’ve recently spent some time with Jim talking about the 2nd serve and specifically how to naturally impart spin to help all of us have a 2nd serve that gives us confidence.

One of the things that Jim and I insist on with a spin serve is a specific grip.

Where exactly do you want to place your hand on the racket to maximize your ability to produce spin?

OK, click this link and take a few more minutes over at Jim’s website so that he can help you develop more spin, a possible kick serve, but at least a natural spin that won’t give your opponent the advantage when you play a 2nd serve.
